INTRO MEME #1

The time has come, my ghostly pals — The Crossing is here! Thanks so much to everyone who applied; we're so stoked to have you. All comms are open for posting as of today; feel free to dive right in! We've just got a few reminders for you, a few updates, and a shiny CR meme to help y'all get the ball rolling.

REMINDERS

A few things to remember as we get started:

• We're all newbies here, so activity this month is check-in only for everyone. Just don't forget that you need to leave a comment on the AC page to check-in; now's a great time to take care of it!


• The network comm ( thecrossing ) supports written communication only to start out with. Feel free to assume your character has received their device (whatever you decide that may be), and perhaps-cryptically briefed on how it works. ("You can use this to stay in touch with the others.") If you need a refresher on the network, check out the Basics section of the FAQ.


• The Ferryman's IC Contact is live — feel free to chat with them if you like! But keep in mind that The Ferryman cannot be contacted via the network at this time, only in-person.


• The TDM is intended to be used for both app rounds within The Cavern: December (that's you guys), and the upcoming round in January. Please keep an eye on it for new toplevels if you're able.

UPCOMING

What's coming down the pipe from us:

• NPC Quests: there are a few more of you than we expected there would be (so exciting!!), so we're working on adding a handful of extra quests so that there's plenty to work with over the next month. We know we're behind on this, so we hope to have the final write-ups for you this week!


• On Saturday, Dec 14th, The Ferryman will make a network post to more properly introduce the Crossing mechanic and to reveal the theme of the first Crossing (scheduled for mid-January). This will be more geared towards characters conversing amongst themselves, but The Ferryman will be available in a limited way to answer questions as well.


• We've recently added a few new items to our calendar, especially around the Crossing event next month & apps (which we've rearranged a bit), so be sure to take a peek!


• We're planning on adding a few more items to the FAQ now that the game is properly getting started, to include some common questions from you guys, as well as to expand on mechanics that have more recently been finalized (the Memory Bank, Rewards, NPC Quests, etc). We'll let everyone know on the mod plurk when those updates are ready, but please do keep asking us questions if you need any clarification at all along the way!

CHARACTER NAME: Nagito Komaeda
CANON & CANON POINT: Danganronpa, post-Danganronpa 3; slight AU where Nagito dies from his terminal illnesses
FIRST TOLL: Nagito has forgotten whether or not he died alone.

PLANS: Because of his canonpoint, Nagito is actually at his most calm and put-together. This is still not very put-together. I'm interested in seeing if some memory-induced trauma reduction can help with that, though not without a lot of drama along the way. He has a lot of dramatic changes based on what he remembers. But that's long-term stuff. Short term:

-Nagito wants to meet people! Honestly, even if it doesn't get explicitly threaded out, you can assume he introduced himself with his name to your character. But we can thread that out, too, if we haven't!
-Lots of searching for things. He's collecting books, because you shouldn't have to stop reading just because you're dead, and he also has a couple of things from Hope's Peak that he will use as props to discuss his terrible high school.
-He mostly avoids the wraiths, but if someone else is with him he isn't completely against exploring outside of the light, so maybe some of that.
-Probably asking the Ferryman more questions and/or listening to other people ask the Ferryman questions.

Short-to-mid-term: Nagito has lost his luck here, but he doesn't realize it. He's resistent to the idea because he can't conceptualize not having it. But sooner or later he's going to realize it's gone, and that's going to be a whole Thing.

CR WISHES: I am 100% aware Nagito easily gathers negative CR and I am totally cool with that. If your character can put up with Nagito, or is even as weird as he is, then that's great. Having actual friends is good for him even if it can be difficult. Debate him about his weird opinions on hope. Question his calmness in the face of death and trauma and absurdity. Try to make sure he doesn't find explosives. Especially right now when things are new I'm up for anything! Be his friend! Be uneasy about him! Get ahead of the curve and be his enemy!

CR OFFERS: Nagito is good at dealing with weird people. He tends to act very calm in the face of 90% of terrible situations... Until he doesn't, but we're still well within "acting calm" limits, so if your character needs someone to try to get them to chill out, Nagito can at least make noises in that direction. If you need someone to very bluntly talk about being dead, he's here for that too. If you like reading, so does Nagito, so maybe something can be done with that.

Actually wouldn’t mind having these two attempt exploring the caverns at some point (pending Ferryman posts and Quests later this month), but Sunny would definitely need Nagito’s calming(?) demeanor ^^

PLANS: Oh boy. Not a bunch of plans starting out aside from *survive in the afterlife.* Poor Sunny isn’t really perturbed by the fact that he’s dead… but he can definitely get spooked by the setting!

CR WISHES: Someone please be his friend (or don’t - I’m not forcing anyone to ^^)!

CR OFFERS: If you can hang around Sunny, he can lead you down a pleasant friendship or the worst of nightmares ^^ I am very aware Sunny, at his worst, can be a walking trigger/trauma dump, so I’m doing my best on tagging any warnings in the subject matter. If there’s anything that you want me to not bring up in RP or you don’t want to interact with Sunny at all, please feel free to utilize his opt out ^^ It’s something I take quite seriously. Aside from that… Omori shouldn’t(?) be a problem? At least for a while. Sunny isn’t calm enough here to access Headspace, so expect lots of video game analogies.

FIRST TOLL: The name she had when she was alive: Lashan. It's not the first time she's forgotten it, but...

PLANS: In her canon, Need is functionally an angel. She died in her seventies three or four thousand years ago and spent the ensuing time haunting a sword and guiding people. While she doesn't like to show vulnerability, is irritable, and enjoys a petty back-and-forth, she cares deeply and easily about people and is very cool-headed and observant.

Need is making or has made herself a sling weapon she can use to huck rocks really fast and really far.

Thanks to too long in the sword she's cautious and kinda paranoid and has suffered a blunting of her ability to feel most emotions. Ideally at some point she'll cry in front of somebody and be really stoic about it. Not having her powers is gonna be frustrating too!

CR WISHES: I enjoy whenever Need cares about people. She's also moved and doesn't entirely know what to do with it when they care about her - she's always the pillar of strength who needs nothing and is reserved and unbothered by enmity, what the heck.

I like her taking a mentor/parental role but it's also fun to play her against someone she regards as a little closer to an equal. It's hard to get all the way there, she's kinda arrogant and thinks of most people as basically children.

CR OFFERS: Need's an experienced mentor who can be gruffly supportive, philosophical, or snipe back and forth, so she's open to anything in that vein. She may be old but she's also tall and muscular and has way too much experience fighting, so it might take some convincing but she could spar or wrestle.

ETC?: There's actually a filk song about Need and from her perspective, and another about one of her bearers taking her up, written by the author. Mercedes Lackey used to love writing songs about her characters! Are they kinda silly? yes. Do I love them? yes. The sincerity!

Also here for having very much enjoyed their TDM thread. I don't know if Celehar's close to someone she views as an equal yet, though right now he definitely respects her and would seek her out regardless.

Though I'll admit to some hope that Need's sniping will bring out his blunter observations now and then.

CANON & CANON POINT: My Hero Academia - chapter 362/episode 149
FIRST TOLL: His apology to his childhood friend Izuku Midoriya for the way that Bakugo treated him over the years.

PLANS: Bakugo has a reputation for being needlessly aggressive but he's chilled out considerably at his canon point. Though he's still He chose to sacrifice his life (and even if he survived his injuries would greatly hinder his dreams) for the greater good and as an apology for his past actions (especially since he can't remember apologizing). Yet, his past still haunts him as does the inability to know if his sacrifice made a difference.

Bakugo will be very adamant about not sacrificing memories and instead fight to remain true to himself. But is that noble? Or just a way to grill himself further about the past.

CR WISHES: Ideally, to create positive CR with others. This is Bakugo getting a clean slate where no one has seen him at his worse and he isn't sure he deserves something like that. People who can rib him for being a perfectionist hot-head is also always fun. He is also unable to properly use his right hand due to the damage he caused to it during his final fight so he'll be forced to humble himself and ask for help.

And while the CR may not necessarily be completely negative, because Bakugo is deeply passionate about refusing help with Crossings in order to retain his memories, I think it would be fun to have him butt heads with other souls when it comes to the philosophy of how they're supposed to succeed. People who can call him out for being stubborn instead of noble.

CR OFFERS: Bakugo is a hot head but spent his entire life wanting to be a hero. So he can be someone who helps out (though he'll criticize you if he thinks you were being careless) and tries to protect people. And since he no longer has his powers, he's acutely aware he'll need to team up with others to succeed. He'll be looking for allies he can count on.

Also, as said above, he is quite determined to pass Crossings without a willing sacrifice, so if your character is unsure, Bakugo can (rightly? wrongly?) try to convince them that he can ensure their safe crossing without sacrifice.

Ultimately, while it's extremely easy to get under his skin, he's actually pretty tolerant of people, even if they give him shit. It's only those that don't try their best or are quick to give up that rub him the wrong way.

They could probably have an interesting discussion about the Crossing options! Nagito will be conflicted about his options re: willingly giving up a memory vs. maybe uncontrollably losing who knows how many memories and he loves debating on every single side.

I have no idea how these two will get along, but I'm curious to find out! Frieda in her current state is very passive and fatalistic (though not to the point where she won't still contribute her share to the group's efforts to figure out how to deal with their situation), so an action-oriented person like Bakugo may help her shape up a little! In turn, she's compassionate and supportive in case he ever needs someone like that.

PLANS: I'll just share my suitability thoughts as they seem apt at this point: "I wanted a character who had some experience in exploration and who would have a unique take on death and the things that make up a person - as someone who lost most of his desires to a demon decades ago Mithrun would, I think, have an interesting take on giving up more of himself in order to proceed or as needed. And more importantly what he might think of other people giving things up, as he's canonically advised others against it as he knows the cost. I also think that it would be interesting to get someone who lived only for one reason - and did not fully realize the other reasons that existed, such as his companions, by his point of death - to view his life, death, and previous connections outside of that scope."

That said, if anyone would like to start a thread with me on the tdm lmk. I tagged out a bit but didn't top level, and I'd be happy to figure something out with anyone I didn't tap.

CR WISHES: Luckily not eating and whatever else ~no longer matters~ so he doesn't need anyone to keep on him about that. I'm open for just about anything but have a special interest in people with Weird Views for him, or other non humans?

CR OFFERS: He is an old man elf (who ofc looks young) who is tired with no sense of direction. If you wanna get lost or find him wandering there's always that, or he's up for random discussion most times since he's pretty agreeable due to lack of interest on most topics outside of things that pertain to work/mission. You can talk him into pretty much whatever outside of that, so shenanigans can occur.

CANON & CANON POINT: Chronicles of Osreth aka The Goblin Emperor and related books! Currently from Grief of Stones. There's a third book coming out in Celehar's trilogy next year so I may end up adjusting some superfluous background details around then
FIRST TOLL: The true name of his god.

PLANS: Celehar is a priest of the God of death in his canon, a canon where there's the very real possibility of the restless undead rising once again, so he's going to be very concerned with making sure that the others pass on as the Ferryman instructs. He has concerns about those Wraiths, while he's at it, though without his former ability to speak to the dead and learn their names to set them to rest, he can't exactly do that as effectively as he might once have.

He's likely to set up some small manner of shrine for prayer and meditation, for his own use if nothing else. He doesn't plan to do anything about grappling with his tragic past (he's lived through a plague, the tragic death of his lover, and at least three near death experiences in the past few years) but he's going to have to come to terms with his existence as a person with feelings outside of his duties to his station, because I said so.

CR WISHES: He could use some friends! Someone to smack him on the head when he's being a self-sacrificing idiot, or just to force him out of thinking about death and duty all of the time (a tall order in a place like this). He's very driven by work and grief at the moment, but he likes drinking tea with friends and reading terrible novels, and he looks after stray animals who he insists aren't his pets.

CR OFFERS: He's thirty-five or so, but between his world-weariness and his chronic lack of sleep, he can come across as much older than he is, and in canon he often comes off as a sober mentor figure. He's not good at being comforting or giving advice, but he's very driven to help others, through whatever blunt advice he can muster about death, or through smaller acts of assistance, in the more mundane and physical sense. He'll be announcing himself as available for both spiritual and mundane help, especially for anyone who reads as pretty young to him.

That said he has been known to lose patience with people, mostly those who he thinks are bringing people harm but occasionally with those he sees as cavalier or foolish. He's talked back to the Emperor of his homeland! Dismissing his religion or knowledge about ghouls is the most likely way to earn a sharp word from him, and I'm happy to play with that kind of antagonism or mutual dislike should it come up.

ETC?: For those unfamiliar with his canon, Celehar is from a steampunk-ish world of a rapidly industrializing empire - think Victorian era with airships and elves. There's also a lot of terminology unique to the setting, and particularly elaborate forms of address. If he's close to someone, Celehar might also start using thee/thy/thou around them, which is a more informal and personal kind of speech for him. I'll probably put together a glossary at some point, but I'll try to make things clear in context. If you have any questions about the details, or if a particular post isn't making sense, please feel free to poke me about it!

I don't think this will really start coming up until the Crossing, but Nagito's complicated feelings about which version of it he should use and how he tends to react to serious enough difficulties (dramatically) might cause some interesting clashes... Which would probably be extra interesting if they talk a bit before the difficult part of this death adventure comes up!

FIRST TOLL: Her memories of her younger half-sister Historia

PLANS: Frieda is a walking AoT spoiler (including the below), so please beware! Ideally use my permissions/opt-out post if you'd like to avoid her because of that (or for any other reason!).

With that out of the way: Having died a violent death in a clash which neither she nor her opponent wanted, her death nevertheless freed her from an enormous burden. She no longer has to keep the truth about her world a secret from all her countrymen and even her own family, and her ancestor's inherited ideology no longer holds her in thrall, but it's a lot to come to terms with. Despite being her own person again, she's internalised the guilt for her people's historical atrocities, and at the same time she feels terrible for not being able to act on their behalf when they came under attack.

As such, Frieda will in all likelihood readily and generously give away her memories at each Crossing to relieve herself of the crushing sorrow and regret! I'm excited to see how that'll work out for her! In between, she'll do her best to contribute to their little soul society here.

CR WISHES / CR OFFERS: Let me just consolidate these..! Despite all of the titan insanity, Frieda largely managed to preserve her original kind and gentle personality even while holding the Founding Titan (occasional unhinged "possessed" moments aside). As the eldest of 6 siblings (now only 5 anyone in her memories!), she tends to look after and dote on those younger than her, and in general she's friendly to other people (in life, she was well-liked by the common people because she was down to earth and spoke with them on eye level despite being a noble / secret royal). Generally speaking, she's easy to get along with!

That said, she does hold some concerning holdover views along the lines of "We must atone for the sins of our ancestors" which may need a while to fully dismantle... I'm very much up for conversations that take a strange turn and for people being discomfited by her!

ETC?: She used her titan powers to erase Historia's memories of her to protect her... now she's the one who can't remember anymore.

I had a lot of fun with their TDM thread! If Frieda doesn't seek him out Celehar might just check in on her himself, though at some point it's going to have to come out that he's definitely not as highly ranked as she thinks he is.

PLANS: So rock-candy catboy here is very confused because he's dead but not really in the right place to be properly dead, so he's going to see if he can get out so he can get to the aetherial sea or back into his body. That might require giving up memories isn't something he'll like very much. But, he also tends to like to come up with plans that involve making a grand sacrifice of himself, so that's not entirely off the table.

Once he finds out they're all basically stuck, he'll be poking around everywhere that's relatively safe at the beginning to try to get a better idea of what the place is like, how it works, and who exactly is around.

CR WISHES: He could use some friends that aren't books. He's not necessarily bad at making friends, just a bit awkward.
People he can chat with about themselves or their worlds.
Kids he can adopt. (He has a granddaughter, let him tell you about her!)
Negative CR is welcomed, so long as it isn't constant bullying or something.

CR OFFERS: G'raha is pretty friendly and will at least pretend to get along with people he hates to avoid a large-scale conflict or awkward group interactions. If someone needs a pep talk or an ear to talk off or even a gofer, he's probably willing to help.

He's not a great liar and his ears and tail tend to give away his actual feelings on basically everything. Feel free to ask him about said ears and tail, he'll be happy to talk about Miqo'te. Be warned that letting him talk about anything related to himself risks activating The Allag Lecture (10 hours unskippable) and oh boy is he happy to talk about them too.

Most of the time, he acts like he's twice the age he looks, but age never really cured him of Being a Little Shit so sometimes mischief and sarcasm happen.

PLANS: Canon doesn't do enough with Yusuke's second death and how it compares/contrasts with his first (much less impulsive, at a time when he values his life much, much more, and with a fuller appreciation of the consequences, but still ultimately a sacrifice for someone else) so HERE I AM. He's at a point where letting go of his life & attachments is going to be much, much harder than the first time around (or at least his desire to let go of everything is much, much lower), and I'm interested in pressing on that a bit -- his instinct will be to white-knuckle his memories as much as possible, but also he has experience with spirits who get stuck or linger because they're holding on too hard. I could see him being swayable one way or the other, or tbh even just being erratic in his decisions about what's worth giving up and what isn't. Let's see where it goes!

Would love to throw Bakugo against Yusuke because I think they'd be fun in so many ways! Bakugo acts like a punk but he's the most strait laced guy ever and will yell at Yusuke for smoking and other delinquent behavior. Plus they can spar and argue about the Crossing strategy! Learning Normalcy-
Lyn is a military brat that enlisted the second she was able to! How do you people outside of that? She has no clue and I would love her to interact with folks who encourage her as a person and not just a Awe-Inspiringly competent soldier. Be forewarned: Lyn will quickly warm up to anyone who obviously comes from a military background and anyone who reminds her of her crew.
Religion/Spirituality-
Lyn has known religious people and held deep admiration for some. She hasn’t really answered these questions for herself and I think it would be interesting to explore given her unique circumstances.
Negative CR-
Lyn has canonically been referred to as “Queen of the Girl Scouts” by one of her more cynical crew members and generally does her best to do right and be fair to everyone. I’m quite sure that will get on some folk's last nerve.
